Aerospace/Military/Defence Product of the Year
Product Name: DBMM Series integrated backshell MIL-DTL-8351G micro connectors
Company: Nicomatic
Entry Statement
In aerospace applications, space and weight are always at a premium and a significant constraint for design engineers. Specialising in micro connectors for civil and military aerospace applications, Nicomatic has an impressive track record of innovation and customer problem-solving spanning over 40 years, resulting in its products being selected for multiple aerospace and military applications worldwide. Despite the challenges of the past couple of years, Nicomatic has continued to increase its turnover and grow its customer base. In addition, it has invested substantially in R & D over the past two years, typically reinvesting over 15% of total revenue into new product development.
One such NPD project saw the launch last year of the DMBB integrated backshell connector as a Nicomatic standard product. The development of the new DBMM Series came about as the result of a number of voice-of-customer requests for custom interconnects based on the outstanding performance parameters and flexibility of the company’s 2mm pitch, low profile DMM Series, but with the additional requirement for shielding against EMI interference. DBMM connectors are particularly suited to civil and military aircraft applications, space applications, radar systems and missile systems.
Nicomatic’s DBMM hi-rel micro connectors are a space-saving and lightweight series that combines the advantages of Nicomatic’s 2mm pitch metal DMM connectors with a completely new design of integrated backshell to provide 360-degree EMI shielding and mechanical protection in an ultra-compact form factor. The rugged DBMM connectors conform to MIL-DTL-83513G performance specifications and allow designers a wide choice of contact arrangements compared to other mil-spec connectors such as Micro-D or Sub-D. Contacts can be signal (LF), power (HP) and coax (HF), with thousands of different combinations possible. Two models are currently available in the new DBMM Series: the DBMM220 with 4 to 32 signal (LF), power (HP) or coax (HF) contacts, and the DBMM320 which offers between 6 and 48 (LF), power (HP) or coax (HF) contacts. Both models are available for straight to cable fix in either male or female orientation with D53B jackscrews.
The DBMM range with its new type of backshell measures only 15mm in depth compared to a standard backshell plus separate DMM connector, which measures 35mm in depth in the smallest available combination. As well as its ultra-compact form factor, the new DBMM range is extremely lightweight, so vital in aerospace applications. Easier handling is another advantage, especially important in critical hi-rel applications. The lower price point of the DBMM Range compared to DMM connectors with separate mono or split backshells reduces overall system costs.
In conclusion, the DBMM Series’ space, weight and cost saving capabilities, combined with EMI shielding, extreme modularity and MIL-DTL-83513G specification, make it a highly advantageous interconnect for multiple aerospace and hi-rel applications.
